The “Zikaron” action
Annual Volunteer Initiative for Cleaning Jewish Cemetery Sections.
On October 13, volunteers from MAAGAL carried out their annual “Zikaron” action, dedicated to cleaning Jewish sections at the Perlovskoe Cemetery in Moscow. The event brought together 36 volunteers, including members of Sipur, Hillel, and the Mytishchi community, as well as two senior volunteers from Hesed Hama.
Founded in 1932, the Perlovskoe Cemetery became a resting place for relocated graves after older cemeteries were demolished. This year, the focus was on Section 6, which required special attention. Rabbi Yochanon Kosenko from the Mytishchi community shared the importance of caring for graves and honoring those who have passed.
The volunteers accomplished significant work, clearing trees, bushes, and debris while cleaning tombstones of dirt and moss. Over 140 graves were tidied, and inscriptions on nine monuments were restored. Artist Pavel Shevelev captured the day with sketches, while Marina Nekhlin documented it through photos.
After the cleanup, the volunteers visited the Jewish Community Center in Mytishchi, where they were welcomed by Chief Rabbi Ruven Kuravsky. He expressed gratitude for their efforts, followed by a kosher meal. Later, Ekaterina Ivanova, director of the Jewish Cultural Center, gave a tour of the community and its museum.
The “Zikaron” action not only preserves memory but also exemplifies unity and a deep respect for our heritage.
