Passover Culinary Campaign
The “My Grandmother’s Jewish Kitchen” campaign for Passover turned into something more than just a cooking masterclass
As part of the preparation for Passover, volunteers of our center carried out a wonderful culinary campaign called “My Grandmother’s Jewish Kitchen.” The initiative was originally conceived as a masterclass, but it grew into something much greater, bringing together different generations in ordinary home kitchens across the city. Our volunteers visited elderly beneficiaries of the center to prepare a festive Passover table together.
It is no secret that many traditions and experiences are passed down directly—from mother to daughter, from grandmother to granddaughter. This time, the focus of transmission was traditional culinary recipes preserved for decades and carefully maintained by generations. For many of us, these dishes are associated with the very taste of childhood that remains in our memory forever. This time, the menu was truly homemade and very delicious. On the kitchen tables stood classic dishes based on matzah.
Together we prepared a fragrant apple kugel, which immediately filled the space with that “festive” aroma. We experimented with desserts: we made a delicate lemon cheesecake based on matzah (it turned out to be incredibly delicious!). And of course, there were the traditional matzickies and golden fried matzah brei, whose recipe is different and secret in every household.
However, what the participants remembered most was the unique atmosphere, where everyone was busy with their own task, yet together they were preparing a festive dish for a shared table. Work went quickly amid pleasant conversation; new ideas were born, and the experience of older generations was passed on. The volunteer culinary masterclass turned into warm family-style gatherings, where everyone at the table felt like the closest and dearest people. Our elderly community members lack precisely this kind of warm communication, where they can once again feel like part of a big and friendly family.
We thank everyone who took part in the campaign! Thank you for your good deeds that support and warm the soul!
