Hanukkah Literary Evening
Volunteers and seniors gathered at the Library to give the holiday a special meaning.
The third day of Hanukkah was marked by a wonderful and incredibly warm gathering in the format of a “Midrash Café,” held at the beloved I. Manger Library. The space is cozy and homely, making it easy to discuss important topics and share personal thoughts and feelings. Volunteers and clients came together to listen to Jewish educator Rivekka Safronova.
The main theme of the evening was Jewish traditions, which Rivekka presented in an accessible and simple way, connecting ancient knowledge with modern life. The highlight of the evening was the lighting of the Hanukkiah. Each candle symbolized support and hope, demonstrating that none of us is alone — together, we are a great force.
The evening then continued in the Midrash Café format, where everyone could hear themselves in the words of others. Participants reflected on quotes from Jewish sages, finding personal meaning in them. Afterwards, they listened to an excerpt from Fiddler on the Roof and discussed it, sharing their own interpretations and insights. For a “dessert” activity, everyone wrote a letter to their future selves, describing their hopes and expectations.
The event concluded with a warm Hanukkah finale: sufganiyot, smiles, inner calm, and the feeling that light is always with you — whether from a glowing candle or the heartfelt warmth of people around you.
