Challah Braiding Workshop

In February, volunteers hosted a hands-on challah braiding workshop at Hesed for AJT teens, giving them an unforgettable culinary experience.

The workshop introduced teenagers to the art of making traditional challah, offering them practical skills and a deeper appreciation for the traditions behind Shabbat bread. Though baking is often considered a more “female” activity, many young men eagerly participated, diving into the world of dough and the inviting aromas of freshly baked bread.

During the workshop, participants learned about the ideal dough consistency for challah, why it matters, and how to achieve it. They compared dough samples, practiced kneading, and mastered the steps necessary to reach the perfect texture. The lesson emphasized that baking requires not only the right ingredients but also patience and attention to detail.

The highlight of the session was braiding the challah. Each loaf was made using four strands of dough, skillfully transformed into neatly braided challot. Volunteers guided every participant closely, ensuring that each teen learned the proper techniques and gained confidence in creating traditional bread.

Once baked, the aroma of fresh challah filled the Hesed, inviting everyone to gather around the table for a warm communal experience. The teens were proud of their accomplishments and gained skills they can now use to help volunteers bake challah for our community members. We extend our gratitude to the organizers for this engaging and educational workshop and to the teens for their active participation and eagerness to learn!
